Hurricane Prep for Pergolas and Outdoor Kitchens
A practical, written storm-prep checklist for motorized pergolas, louvered systems, retractable screens, and outdoor kitchens.
Every Sky Vera Living project comes with a written storm-prep checklist at handoff. The summary below is a public version — useful even if your structure was built by someone else.
Before the storm
Open louvered pergola blades fully so wind passes through the structure rather than catching against a closed surface.
Retract all motorized and manual side screens completely. Stow them in their cassettes.
Bring in loose cushions, light furniture, lanterns, planters, and anything that can become airborne.
Power down outdoor refrigeration and ice makers if extended outages are likely. Empty refrigeration if the storm is severe.
Cover or remove outdoor TVs, speakers, and any non-weather-rated electronics.
During the storm
Stay out of the structure. Don't attempt to operate motorized systems during high winds.
If you lose power, motorized systems will remain in their last position. They are designed to ride out the storm in the 'open' state.
After the storm
Visually inspect the structure before operating any moving parts. Look for displaced louvers, debris in tracks, and any sign of structural movement.
Clear gutters and rail channels of leaves and debris before closing the louvers — water needs to drain.
If anything looks off, contact us before operating. We will dispatch a service tech.
